It was late summer in Cleveland, 1984. We were working a job in Glenville, trying to get an old wrought-iron driveway gate to close properly for a homeowner who’d been through three other companies. Each one had quoted her a full replacement. One wanted $4,200 for a new gate she didn’t need. The gate was fine. The hinges were worn, the post had settled two inches, and the latch was installed wrong. We fixed it in an afternoon with a torch, a level, and a pair of properly hung hinges.
She paid us and then she cried. Not from relief, from anger, at the money she’d almost spent, at the months of waiting, at being treated like a number. That night we called the parent company and asked to open the Cleveland branch. We told them this market needed someone who’d look at a gate and see what it actually needed, not what would make the biggest invoice.
